In Australia, FSANZ is incorporated into the Federal Government's Health and Ageing portfolio. The current Minister for Health and Ageing is the Hon Nicola Roxon MP.

FSANZ utilises a variety of sciences, including the social sciences as well as biological and chemical sciences in order to perform risk analyses and determine whether a food supply can be deemed safe. The FSANZ science strategy (PDF, 2.5MB) outlines current and future strategies to uphold and improve the scientific capability of the organisation.
