Victorian Government Departments with Responsibility for Biotechnology, Medical Research and Health

Department of Business and Innovation (DBI)
The Department of Business and Innovation is the Victorian Government's lead agency for economic development. The Government's goals for quality jobs and thriving, innovative industries across Victoria are supported by DBI's objectives: Investment Attraction, Trade Development, Developing Innovative Industries and Marketing Victoria.

The Science and Technology Programs branch in DBI focuses on science policy, including biotechnology and medical research, and the implementation of life science related programs.

Department of Primary Industries (DPI)
The Department of Primary Industries is responsible for enhancing primary and energy industries’ contribution to the economic wealth and well-being of the Victorian community. DPI works with the agriculture, energy, minerals, petroleum, fishing and forestry industries ensuring that the benefits arising from biotechnology are utilised.

Department of Health (DH)
The Department of Health is responsible for delivering health services in Victoria, including investment in medical research infrastructure, streamlining clinical trials and community engagement on biotechnology-related health issues.

Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE)
The Department of Sustainability and Environment is responsible for the sustainable management of water resources and catchments, bushfires, public land, forests, biodiversity and ecosystems. Of particular relevance to biotechnology is Victoria’s biodiscovery policy. Biodiscovery or ‘bioprospecting’ involves research into biological resources for commercial or industrial purposes, including pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals.
