Victoria is home to four biotechnology precincts that consolidate the extensive activity in this sector.
The Central biotechnology precinct is well recognised for its major health biotechnology focus and strengths, with three universities (University of Melbourne, RMIT University and Swinburne University), nine hospitals and some of Australia’s oldest and most renowned medical research institutes in close proximity.
The North biotechnology precinct is centred around the suburb of Bundoora and represents a significant agribiosciences cluster, as well as being home to several Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs), and health biotechnology translation activity.
The South East biotechnology precinct has a strong translational focus in health research, industrial biotechnology and nanotechnology and includes Monash University, Southern Health, the Monash Health Translation Precinct and AMREP (the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct).
The South West precinct is based around Deakin University in Geelong and is known for its Industrial biotechnology and large scale manufacturing capability.
